A lot of good writing is actually about good editing, and when it comes to Twitter everyone soon learns some basic editing skills.
It's about wanting to make a point, then, realising you need to lose some characters, deciding what to cut. The questions go through your mind...do I really need the word 'that'? How about an ampersand instead of 'and'? If I drop the middle bit of the sentence how will that change the meaning or tone?
I've seen many people who wouldn't call themselves natural writers become pretty skilled at these kinds of editing decisions when faced with the 140-character limit.
It's interesting that Tweeters don't seem to have adopted text-speak. Even lols and smilies are used sparingly. Perhaps part of the fun of Twitter is the challenge of producing good, tight writing.
